Electro-Harmonix Nano POG

The revered Polyphonic Octave Generator from EHX is now available in super-slim compact format, with glitch-free tracking.

Like the Micro POG (its slightly heftier sibling), the Nano POG is a miniaturised, stripped-down version of EHX’s much-loved madness purveyor, the shapeshifting POG2. Designed ostensibly to make your guitar do a passable-in-a-loud-band imitation of instruments with a different frequency range (so, a 12-string guitar or mandolin, a bass etc), the effect can also be used to explore more diverse sonic territory, via mixing more than one octave effect, adding onboard EQ, a low-pass filter and detune, to create some otherworldly, powerful, or just plain disturbing, sounds – especially when combined with the drive, fuzz, modulation and delays in your arsenal.

In this compact, less-than-half-price version, something has to give, of course. Gone is the ability to store your presets, the slow attack, low-pass filter and detune controls and the range of extended harmonisation settings.

What you do get is a straightforward triumvirate of level controls for the octave up, sub octave and dry sounds, and you can choose to send these as one combined signal in mono, or as a combination of effected and dry signals to two separate destinations. Octave effects live or die by the quality of their tracking, and the Nano POG’s is excellent – it’s polyphonic, so chords and notes are reproduced without glitches and with minimal latency.

Since octave is an effect you’re unlikely to use on every song, you could investigate the Soul POG, a multi-effect combing the Soul Food transparent overdrive with the functionality of the Nano POG (plus a Mode switch for a choice of two different octave up sounds). Although you sacrifice the pedalboard real estate, you can use each effect together or separately.
