Stone Deaf PDF-2

A two-channel clean-and-dirty EQ, boost and drive unit that’s a musical toolkit for filtering the frequency emphasis of your tone.

Based in Oldham and Huddersfield, Stone Deaf is perhaps best known for creating the PDF-1 Parametric Distortion Filter that’s found its way onto the pedal boards of such luminaries as Nick Valensi of The Strokes and Queens Of The Stone Age star Josh Homme, who apparently uses two PDF-1s in place of his old Maestro MPF-1 parametric filter. He might need to pop back to the North of England for an upgrade, because this recently released successor offers a lower noise floor and more versatility than the already impressive original.

The PDF-2 is all about EQ filtering and overdrive. The principles behind it are similar to the PDF-2’s excellent sister effects – the Fig Fumb and Kliptonite fuzzes. On the clean channel, with the Bandwidth set to max, you can get something like a full-frequency boost by cranking the height control; tighten up the Bandwidth and the Frequency dial comes into play, allowing you to apply extreme cut or boost to any frequency range.

Switching channels brings the gain control into the equation; this ranges from beefy medium-gain overdrive to something not far short of full-on, gnarly fuzz. You can also set it up for a clean boost to live alongside chunky overdrive, versatile alt-rock tones and creative filtering options – so plenty of bang for your buck from one unit.

If you bring Stone Deaf’s EP-1 expression pedal (£120) into play, then filter sweeping, wah-wah and manual tone shifting effects are all underfoot, too. Without the pedal, you can still sweep the Freq dial to emphasise your tone at a point between 35Hz to 6kHz and cut through the mix.bOverall, this is a highly musical pedal with enormous scope that excels in the alternative rock realm but could also see plenty of action in numerous other genres.
