Xotic Wah XW-1

A high-end wah that offers a virtually limitless tonal palette, based on the Holy Grail of wahs – the Clyde McCoy wah made in Italy in the late 1960s.

The XW-1 is the debut wah from Californian guitar and effects maker Xotic, and it’s the real McCoy – that is to say, it’s based on the pivotal wah pedal designed by Vox for trumpeteer Clyde McCoy and marketed in the late 1960s, though functionally, the Xotic is to that pedal what the Bugatti Veyron is to a Ford Cortina.

The spec incorporates an exhaustive selection of useful tone-shaping trickery – easily the most we’ve seen on a pedal of this kind. This includes a quartet of micro-pots that are sited unobtrusively along the pedal’s right-hand side, an internal trim pot for setting the input gain and, again inside the pedal, a further four dip switches that allow settings such as the Q frequency, amount of presence cut and treble frequency in the treadle’s toe-down range to be fine-tuned.

Start fiddling around with these in earnest (including matching the internal input gain trimmer control to match the level of your signal chain) and you will soon come to realise that the sheer variety of wah voicings in the XW-1 is absolutely staggering – the merest twist of the Bias or Wah Q controls will reveal yet another inspiring side to its personality.

It also has a fuzz-friendly buffering circuit to ensure it plays nicely with your fuzz unit of choice – a bonus, as the two effects together are a sonic match made in heaven.

Perhaps you’re of the school of guitarists who only use wah sparingly – in which case, the level of engineering (and therefore the asking price) is overkill. However, if you’re the kind of player who loves the effect and also cares about the provision of a “self-lubricating nylon bushing pivot for quiet and smooth operation with fully adjustable rocker-pedal tension”, then check this out without hesitation.
